pressing 'cancel' when a job is running does not work

I was calibrating the speed using a 200mm square and timing the movement around the square, then altering the config.txt
When I was a long way off and moving very slowly to I tried to stop (Cancel) the cut using the display panel, but nothing happened.
Is this a bug or am I missing something fundamental ?
